To historia sprzed kilku dni, ale warto ją przytoczyć, żeby pokazać, jak istotny dla bezpieczeństwa jest Autopilot i ogólnie wszystkie systemy ADAS wspomagające kierowcę. Pewien Norweg zasnął pijany za kierownicą podczas jazdy po autostradzie z szybkością około 100 km/h. Samochód wykrył brak reakcji właściciela i się zatrzymał.
Tesla na Autopilocie. Samochód mądrzejszy niż kierowca
Z relacji wynika, że Tesla Model S przejechała autostradą ponad 10 kilometrów. Ostatecznie Autopilot zadecydował o zatrzymaniu się w tunelu, włączył też światła awaryjne. Służby zostały zawiadomione przez innych kierowców, którzy nie byli w stanie obudzić właściciela samochodu (tłumaczenie napisów na dole):

Policja podała później, że 24-latek upił się do nieprzytomności i spał za kierownicą. Sytuacja miała miejsce o godzinie 5.40, więc impreza musiała trwać do białego rana. Właściciel Tesli stanowczo protestował przeciwko oskarżeniom, dlatego pobrano mu krew do badania.
Opisywane zdarzenie jest oczywiście ekstremalne, ale każdy z kierowców doświadczył chyba sytuacji, gdy podczas nocnej jazdy jego powieki stawały się coraz cięższe. W takich warunkach Autopilot/systemy ADAS mogą nie tylko uratować auto, ale też życie. Uderzenie w przeszkodę przy szybkości 100 km/h bez hamowania (bo kierowca śpi) niesie za sobą znacznie większe ryzyko śmierci niż uderzenie po hamowaniu.
